The Artist

The Path That Has No Name 


Nature is the artist. I work with nature, and welcome the viewer to enter into this embrace of the unknowable. 


Wandering the path that has no name reaches ever deeper essence. There is no map, no guidebook. Every step is new ground, making a new mark. A drawing emerges, line by line.


Focusing purpose, using ever simpler materials, is my commitment. I use elemental tools – twigs, fish bones, dead things – gathered from nature, for drawing instruments, later returned to nature. 


A twig dipped into ink makes a first mark. Where is it heading? Where am I pulled? The landscape reveals itself, gradually, never fully. Each step asks: What is this? 


Then the next line, and next. I wander into the picture. The pull inspires, uplifts. I am drawn into the landscape before knowing it. I live for this discovery. 


Cherishing modesty, I work in small intimate formats. I do not define what the viewer will see. As nature has offered me an opening to awaken, I want to offer the viewer a similar opening.  


Most of my images have no title, as titles define the viewer's approach. When I walk in nature I do not want signs telling me what I see. I respect the viewer’s intelligence. 


I do not want to explain nature. Explanation serves practical aims but is partial knowing. I want whole knowing, and dialogue – with nature, with the viewer.  


Life means embracing the known, the unknown and the unknowable.
